Chapter 21

“Most exalted Mr. Cole, I have been studying Chill Touch for over a month now. I have mastered the First and Second Frost Theorems with ease, yet when I try to manifest the spell model, I always fail at the third step. I have never understood why. Here is the process I follow when shaping the model…”

Mr. Y went on to list a detailed series of arcane formulas on the paper.

Cole studied them for a moment and could not help a faint smile. He actually knew the answer to Y’s problem. On the surface the formulas looked correct, but in fact the man had misapplied one of the theorems.

It was a classic beginner’s mistake—one that the specialist arcane scholar Maxwell had specifically addressed in his marginal notes.

As someone who had already succeeded in casting Chill Touch, Cole reviewed Y’s work the way a teacher grades a student’s paper: everything was perfectly clear.

He picked up the old dip pen beside the desk and wrote the correct derivations on the back of Y’s letter, adding a brief note: “Theorems are the heart of arcane. They govern the universe. For an arcane scholar to misuse a theorem is a profoundly foolish thing.”

The raven was still lingering outside the window. Cole stepped to the sill and tapped lightly on the frame. The bird swooped down at once.

He tossed the rolled oilskin message outward. The raven caught it neatly, tucked it beneath its tongue, flapped its wings, and vanished into the flock circling overhead.

Y’s reply came faster than Cole had expected. That same afternoon the black bird returned to his windowsill.

“Most esteemed and mighty Mr. Cole, thank you for your guidance! I cannot tell you how thrilled I am. After studying your formulas I saw my error in an instant. I have just succeeded in casting the spell. I will repay you however I can. What do you need? I mean… there may be small, trifling matters I could handle on your behalf—things you might find inconvenient to do yourself. I have some standing in Silver City and access to channels for information and potions…”

Y’s tone was reverent and almost giddy with excitement. “And ‘Theorems are the heart of arcane. They govern the universe’—what a brilliant maxim! Thank you, Mr. Cole, for sharing such a profound warning so generously!”

The words had clearly struck him deeply.

There were even a few scratched-out corrections in the letter; the handwriting was hurried—evidence of the man’s agitation.

For any student of arcane, having a guide made all the difference in the world. Cole’s formulas had been elegantly concise, unmistakably advanced.

What Y did not know was that Cole had held back. There were subtler refinements he had not revealed.

Cole was not worried about sharing this much. He had already realized his own talent for arcane far outstripped the ordinary.

He had no fear that someone of Y’s modest gifts could ever overtake him. Given time, once Cole’s power grew, he would hold all the leverage. If he could learn the man’s true identity, Y’s life would rest entirely in his hands.
